How a personalized bust is made
The process has six stages, each handled by a different specialist.
Stage 1: Sculpting. The sculptor creates the portrait in clay at the agreed size, working from photographs (and occasionally life sittings). For a life-size bust, sculpting takes 200 to 600 hours of skilled hand work. The sculptor submits progress photos and meets with you for approval at key milestones.
Stage 2: Mold-making. A multi-part rubber or silicone mold is built around the approved clay. For complex undercuts or outstretched features, the mold can have 20 or more sections.
Stage 3: Wax. Hot wax is painted or poured into the mold to create a hollow wax shell. The wax is chased (cleaned, joined, detailed) to match the original surface.
Stage 4: Ceramic shell. The wax is dipped in ceramic slurry and stucco until a thick shell forms. The wax is melted out in an autoclave.
Stage 5: Bronze pour. Molten bronze (around 2,000掳F) is poured into the pre-heated ceramic shell.
Stage 6: Chase and patina. The ceramic shell is broken away. The bronze is chased, polished, and a patina is applied by hand.
What Photos Should You Send the Sculptor
The quality of the final bust depends heavily on the reference photos. Strong reference includes:
- Front view, head-on, eyes open and looking forward
- Three-quarter view, slightly turned, ideally the “better side” of the face
- Profile view, fully turned to the side
- Hair detail, especially the direction of growth and any styling
- Eye detail, close-up if possible, especially if the eyes are unusual
- Distinguishing features, any feature the sculptor should emphasize (smile lines, scar, mole, glasses)
- Expression reference, photos showing the natural expression you want to capture
Send high-resolution images (2 MB or larger per photo). Multiple angles give the sculptor more to work with.
2026 price ranges
Pricing varies by size, finish, and whether the bust is one-of-a-kind or part of an edition:
- Half-size bust (10” to 14”): $4,000 to $9,000
- Life-size head bust (18” to 22”): $12,000 to $30,000
- Heroic-size bust (24” to 32”): $25,000 to $70,000
- Larger-than-life memorial bust (36” to 48”): $60,000 to $150,000+
The sculpting fee is the largest portion, typically 35 to 50 percent of the total. Foundry work, mold, patina, and base add the rest.

Indoor display usually uses a wood or marble base. Outdoor installation requires a stone or concrete pedestal with internal anchoring.
Bases and Pedestals
Most personalized busts ship with a separate base. Common options:
- Marble base (black, white, or veined): $150 to $600 for stock sizes
- Granite base: $200 to $800
- Wood base (walnut, mahogany, cherry): $180 to $500
- Cast stone or concrete pedestal (outdoor): $400 to $3,000
- Custom engraved nameplate: $80 to $250
For outdoor installation, the pedestal is typically installed first and the bust is mounted after with stainless steel threaded anchors.
Can a personalized bust be made from a single old photograph?Yes, but the result depends on the quality of the reference. Multiple angles and sharp focus help a great deal. The sculptor can work with one photo but the result will reflect what is visible in that image.
How long does a personalized bust take?From contract to delivery, expect 6 to 14 months for a life-size bust. Sculpting takes 3 to 5 months, foundry work another 3 to 4 months, patina and finishing another 4 to 6 weeks, and installation 2 to 6 weeks depending on the site.
Can I approve the clay before bronze is poured?Yes. Reputable sculptors will submit progress photos at multiple stages and ask for your approval before the mold is made. Most contracts include one or two rounds of revisions at the clay stage. Additional revisions may incur a fee.
What if I don't like the finished bust?This is why approval at the clay stage matters. Once bronze is poured and patina is applied, the work is essentially fixed. Major changes require a new sculpture. The contract should specify what happens if you reject the finished work.
