Funeral quotes: what to read, write, and engrave for a memorial service

A funeral quote does three things at once: it names the loss, it honors the person, and it gives the mourners something to hold onto in a room full of grief. Choosing between a quote for the service and a quote for the plaque

A funeral quote and a memorial plaque inscription are not the same thing. A funeral quote is spoken in a room full of people who knew the person. It can be long, it can be literary, it can depend on the speaker’s voice.

A plaque inscription is read by strangers in a park or a cemetery, years after the funeral. It should be short, clear, and self-contained. The person reading it in 2050 will have no context beyond what is engraved on the metal.
