Cremation headstones serve the same function as traditional burial headstones but are sized and configured for a cremation plot, a columbarium niche, or a smaller memorial location. The specific detail is what makes the inscription memorable. “Beloved mother and grandmother” is generic; “Mary Elizabeth Hayes, 1948鈥?024, who kept a garden that fed half the neighborhood and a heart that fed the rest” is specific.

Cremation markers sometimes include additional elements: a religious symbol, a military emblem, a fraternal symbol, an image of a favorite place or activity, or a short poem or quote. The space on a cremation marker is limited, so additions must be chosen carefully. A single emblem plus a short inscription reads better than three emblems with no inscription.
